• The South Mountain Recreation Complex is a family entertainment center which includes the Turtleback Zoo and the Richard J. Codey Arena featuring two ice rinks, concessions, an arcade and meeting rooms. As part of a major renovation for the Essex County Parks Department, work was performed in three areas: the newly constructed two-story parking garage, the 14,000 SF arena addition and the two NHL-regulation sized ice rinks.
• The parking garage not only serves guests to the complex but also contains a park-n-ride for bus commuters. The existing overhead utility lines were moved underground and upgraded to accommodate both the new structure and parts of Turtleback Zoo. New site lighting went up throughout the complex creating a safer environment for commuters and visitors to the zoo.
• In the arena itself, power and lighting was installed in the new addition along with a new switchboard capable of handling the upgraded systems. The arena’s two ice rinks were improved, one with new refrigeration and one with new dehumidifiers. (Both installations needed to be of the highest quality since, at the time, the facility was the primary practice and training site of the New Jersey Devils.)
• The arena is now the setting for tournaments, events and gatherings. The renovation has modernized the complex, making it a safe and accessible venue for New Jersey residents to enjoy.
